Why am I passionate about this?

I have been writing for more than a decade specifically in fantasy. My mind was filled with tales of magic, heroes, and mythical creatures for decades. When Christ called me it was like learning how to fit my creativity and imagination into this box. Except, He is the box from which all creativity comes. As for my expertise concerning the Word of God, I have studied the Bible from beginning to end and I have prepared and preached a number of sermons. I will one day be a full-fledged pastor, and writing is a part of the job. I have a unique blend of fantasy and Christ.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Dawn of Wonder

Colton Mckay Why did I love this book?

Jonathan makes me want to be friends with both him and his characters.

I found in Dawn of Wonder a truly unique world that challenges me to write better. I have struggled to find the desire to read, but his work awoke a certain hunger in me that I haven't felt in quite a while.

Most importantly for me is the clear presence of Christ.

I highly recommend his lush creation. It is great fantasy fare made better by the recognition of his own Creator.

Book cover of The Pillar of Light

Colton Mckay Why did I love this book?

I enjoyed Anna's writing because of her courage to include missionaries in her work.

Often times those who love Christ refuse to speak of Him or include Him.

Anna does not have this problem and her work is better for it. I found here a rich world that parallels our own in creative ways.

I didn't want to put it down and I am excited to read the rest of the series.

Book cover of On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness

Colton Mckay Why did I love this book?

As children we are taught to not judge a book by its cover and Andrew taught me to not judge a book by its title either.

The perfectionist in me thought the title foolish and roundabout. Andrew disabused me and I am thankful for it.

I had the pleasure of hearing the audio version and it blew me away with its depth, creativity, and humour. I described it to my wife as if Lord of the Rings had been written by Dr. Seuss.

There is a certain musicality to his prose and to my delight I found he is also a musician. I don't say this lightly - this is a must-read!

Book cover of The Dragon and the Stone

Colton Mckay Why did I love this book?

The Dragon and the Stone is something that I very much want to share with my children when they grow older.

As an adult I enjoyed the creativity and sense of wonder that marked many of the stories I read and heard as a youth.

I was delighted by the beautiful fantasy that Kathryn created. I found myself getting lost in her words in the most wonderful way.

This is exactly what fantasy strives to be.

Book cover of The Magician's Nephew

Colton Mckay Why did I love this book?

For many years I thought that The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was the first entry in the Chronicles of Narnia so imagine my surprise (and delight) when I found the entire seven book series at a second hand store.

I want to read more of his work as Lewis is a wonderful example of someone who works for Christ.

In particular there is a scene where the Lion is singing creation into existence and Lewis's description is beautiful.

It's included here as a recognition to the open door that he left for us fantasy freaks.
